Emergency Department Sickle Cell Assessment of Needs and Strengths (ED-SCANS)

The Emergency Department Sickle Cell Assessment of Needs and Strengths (ED-SCANS) is a decision support tool and quality improvement framework to guide practice of SCD in the ED setting. The ED-SCANS includes 7 key decisions to consider when managing adults with SCD. The ED-SCANS was developed by Dr. Tanabe with NIH funding (1K23NR010940).

Each decision includes a supporting algorithm to guide care for the individual patient, and for different emergency departments.
